A "Beef" With the Chick-Fil-A Cows

Since most people are not familiar with cows in general, I thought I would educate (and entertain) while explaining a little pet peeve I have with the Chick-Fil-A cows.

They are DAIRY cows and in little jeopardy of being eaten!!

Don't understand? Well, the Chick-fil-a cows are actually Holstein cows, which are bred to produce massive amounts of milk after delivering a calf. Dairy cows are not bred for meat. They spend their lives producing milk, thus the Chick-fil-a cows should not be so worried about their lives. LOL

Below is an example of a beef cow. It is a Santa Gertrudis cow and is actually in the field behind my house. That is my then 2.5 year old son standing naked in front of the cow. Can you tell they have grown up around cows and have little fear of them?

Another little fact about cows (a LOT of people don't know this) is that cows can have horns also. Just because a cow has horns, it does not automatically make it a bull. So many people come out to the farm and call a cow a bull because of the horns. Both sexes can have horns, I promise.

Did you enjoy your brief cow lecture? Now, I would love to hear if any of those reading this are familiar with cows. Do you live on a farm and raise cattle? What breed to you raise?

For those who care, most of the cows are Santa Gertrudis mixed with Angus or Gelvy. My husband grew up showing pure Gerts all around the country, but after he and his sisters aged out, his dad starting cross breeding the herd. Our kids will soon start showing, and that will be a whole new world for me!

I know nothing about cows. My daughter works at Chick fli A - I'll have to share this new insight with her. But don't you think Jersey's (that's what they're called, right?) look especially cow-ish? And their color is perfect for the graphics of the logo.

Actually they are Holsteins, and yes, they were probably picked for their contrasting colors and pattern. BUT, it still irks me that they are portraying these dairy cows as being afraid of being eaten. LOL

I actually did enjoy this lesson about cows. I am a city girl and knew nothing about this. Very interesting and funny!

Your blog has really taken off! I love it! How have all been? How is your daddy? We are on the downside of a very tough and steep hill...it's nice to be thriving again. Miss you!

Definitely familiar with cows, although we don't raise any. I grew up with my Grandfather's cows and miss being around them. Love your blog by the way!

Ha. Ha. Very familiar with cows... You know, I really didn't want to know as much about cows as I now know.
We raise Black Angus. Some of them are part Charloise (not sure I spelled that right) though because the neighbor's bull kept getting in. They are for EATING. There are quite a few dairies in our county though... about 20 miles south of the farm. They need a lot of hay... which works great for us, because in addition to having about 750 cows, we have a lot of hay.
Oh... and even though I was driving tractors and feeding cows through out my pregnancy, my fourth child is terrified of cows. It is really inconvenient.

Sorry. I know I already commented, but I love the tan line on that little hiney. Last summer, our four year old had a nicely tanned body and legs, but a totally white bottom. Katie kept telling him he was dirty and needed to use more soap on his tummy and legs. That picture just reminded me of her comments to him.
